Abstract Many countries on the Pacific Rim are developing rapidly, and the Pacific Ocean itself plays a significant role in this development, in places limiting it and in places enhancing it. The sheer size of the ocean is daunting indeed if one contemplates trying to understand ot, and its coastal zones, by using traditional observations. Satellite remote sensing is a new technology that offers the opportunity to overcome many of these obstacles, and thus permit the understanding that will lead to improvement of the environment and to making optimum use of opportunities.  This book is a product of the contributions of 110 Authors from the 1st Pacific Ocean Remote Sensing Conference held in Okinawa, Japan.
